The Impact:
Reduce equipment purchases, and maximise use of existing equipment

Details
Sharing laboratory equipment that is underused by individual groups reduces unnecessary purchases, helps safe resources and lab space.
By identifying opportunities for local or cross-departmental sharing and establishing a simple sharing system of available equipment, labs can significantly reduce costs and avoid redundant acquisitions. Almost any equipment may be shared, but there are considerations that need to be applied for each type, for e.g. appropriate training, booking systems, and reporting issues.
Examples for equipment that could be shared: centrifuges, PCR machines, incubators, plate readers, cold storage units, water baths, dishwashers, drying ovens, HPLC, GC, IR, GPC, NMR etc.
