While many testing procedures require single-use materials, there are means to reduce the usage. Reducing these will reduce the environmental impacts of experiments conducted in the lab. Consider these 3Rs of circular economies- Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose.

For example, can certain single use consumables in the lab, in particular for teaching purposes, be replaced with reusable ones.
Here are some examples of target areas to assess:
- Reusbale cutlery and cups
- Avoid double-bagging any samples
- Refillable cleaning products and cleaning items rather than single use disposable wipes
- Digital documentation of participant forms to reduce printing demand
- Battery recharging stations for equipment requiring disposable batteries

For Bioanlysis based work, think about how other life science labs aim to reduce thier consumables, in particular single use plastics.Where samples are being taken for teaching purposes and non-clinical applications, can you consider reusing them?

Additionally, look at commonly used items in the lab and opt for more sustainable purchase options such as low-packaging alternatives, bulk purchasing and locally sourced.
