Details
Maintaining momentum in sustainability initiatives requires coordination, continuity and clear responsibilities. By assigning one or more sustainability coordinators within the research group, labs can ensure that sustainable practices are implemented consistently, regularly reviewed, and communicated effectively.
A coordinator acts as a point of contact, supports training, facilitates discussions in group meetings, and liaises with other groups, departments or institutional sustainability networks. Ideally, coordination includes both academic staff (for decision-making and research alignment) and technical staff (for practical lab operations), ensuring broad ownership and knowledge integration.
Furthermore, sustainability should be embedded into meetings/groups so that responsibilities are not sorely shifted to the coordinator.
