The Impact:
Ventilated systems are major energy users, some units can draw as much power as multiple households if left running continuously, so reducing unnecessary runtime directly lowers energy usage and carbon emissions. Even simple shutdown practices can cut overall energy use by around 10%, helping reduce both emissions and operating costs with no impact on animal care

Details

Switch off equipment when not in use, including ventilated units, lights, UV and filtration systems. This helps prevent unnecessary energy consumption by ensuring that devices only operate when they are actively required for procedures or animal care. Ventilated units, rack systems, cage‑changing stations, and other airflow dependent equipment draw significant power even when idle, so shutting them down during periods of inactivity reduces avoidable energy use and wear on equipment. Likewise, turning off room lighting, task lighting, UV disinfection systems, and standalone filtration devices when they are not needed helps maintain efficient operation of the facility while supporting broader sustainability goals. Adopting this behaviour not only cuts energy costs, but also contributes to safer, more controlled labs by ensuring equipment is only active when intentionally in use. Signage should be available nearby to advise on best practice e.g. please switch off after use or end of day.
