The Impact:
Optimising fume hoods and ventilated equipment significantly reduces energy consumption.

Details
Shutting the sash saves vast amounts of energy and should always be at the lowest agreeable height when working inside a fume hood. When not being used the sash should always be shut to reduce air demand. Avoid using fume hoods as storage. Chemicals should be stored in a vented chemical cupboard where needed. Storage inside a fume hood prevents air circulation and forces the unit to work harder. Keep the area free from unnecessary equipment. When downdraft tables are in use keep the area free and clear of additional items to prevent fans overworking. Maintenance should routinely performed, and filters are systematically changed.
