The Impact:
Reduces consumption of resources by avoiding unnecessary re-collection of samples

Details
Although more research is needed, ' The Carbon Footprint of Pathology Testing' (McAlister et. al.) suggests that the largest contributor to the carbon footprint of a blood test are the consumables used in venepuncture. Adding additional test requests onto existing samples avoids additional consumables being used in sample collection, is more convenient for the patient and is likely to be cheaper. Labs may be able to work with IT/designers of the test requesting system to improve the process for adding additional on test requests. Feedback from clinical users should be used to inform any changes.
