The Impact:
Reduces overall energy usage for the mass spectrometer as the instrument enters a low power mode.

Reduces gas flow in some instances which reduces gas usage.

If coupled to chromatography, a shutdown method could also include the mobile phase or carrier gas flowing through the column reducing solvent waste following the acquisition.

Details
This could vary depending on the instrument manufacturer and the modality coupled to the mass spectrometer. For more routine analysis which uses chromatography, this is more easily implemented following long acquisitions. Newer modalities, e.g. imaging, uses the same software in more uncoventional methods during acquisitions. Users should ensure to manually put the instrument into standby when not in-use or following acquisitions.
