Water and process efficiency

Category: Print & Dye Workshop

Level: Bronze

Author: Hannah Ogahara, June Fish, Laura Baker

The Impact:
Without awareness of how dyeing, printing, washing, and rinsing processes use water and generate wastewater, inefficient practices such as overuse, repeated washing, uncontrolled rinsing, or incorrect disposal can significantly increase environmental impact. Establishing basic awareness helps reduce avoidable waste and prevent harmful discharge into drainage systems.

Details

Students are introduced to the importance of efficient use of water and processes during dyeing, printing, washing, and rinsing.
Basic guidance is provided to avoid unnecessary repetition, excessive water use, and inefficient process steps.
Basic guidance is also provided on what can and cannot be disposed of via sinks, ensuring that hazardous substances such as concentrated dyes, inks, solvents, and fixatives are not discharged directly into wastewater systems.
