The Impact:
Reduces carbon footprint and resource extraction by extending the life cycle of instruments and components. Avoids unnecessary manufacturing emissions and waste generation. Repurposing underused instruments or parts can also reduce costs and improve overall lab efficiency.

When purchasing new instrumentation, prioritise second-hand or refurbished options where possible. If new purchase is required, engage with manufacturers to identify the most sustainable models (e.g. energy-efficient systems, modular designs).

In addition, assess whether existing or underutilised instruments can be repurposed, shared or redeployed within the institution or across departments. Components (e.g. pumps, detectors, PCs, gas lines) from decommissioned instruments may also be reused where compatible.
