Instrument Utilisation and Shared Access

Category: Mass Spectrometry

Level: Silver

Author: Helena Rapp Wright and Caroline Pollard

The Impact:
Maximises the use of existing instrumentation, reducing the need to purchase duplicate systems and lowering the overall environmental impact associated with manufacturing, installation, servicing and energy consumption, as well as costs. Improved scheduling also reduces idle instrument time and increases operational efficiency across departments or institutions.

Details

Many mass spectrometers are underutilised due to fragmented ownership between research groups. Introducing a shared access and utilisation programme ensures instruments are used more efficiently before additional systems are purchased. This may include centralised booking systems, cross-group access agreements, coordinated maintenance schedules and monitoring instrument utilisation. Underused instruments may also be reassigned to different groups or institutions (see the respective action).
